Rum – 5 Yummy Ways to Drink it!
There are many ways in which you can drink your rum all depending on the style that you have or like the most.
As you may have guessed from previous articles we like our Rum here at Hip flask HQ and so, we thought that we would share with you our favourite ways to drink rum.
On the rocks – aka over ice. Depending on the rum that we have in the cupboard depends on how we drink it. At the moment, thanks to a cocktail bar called Coo Coos in Cabo Roig Spain, we have a new favourite rum, a little dark Cuban number called Legendario. The only way to drink this beauty is on the rocks, anything else would just ruin the flavour. Pour into a nice big glass which a chunk of ice, add a few coffee beans and a slice of orange peel and you will be in rum heaven.
As well as Legendario, other rums that go really well over ice are, The Kraken, Sailor Jerry’s and Rumboullion. There are many more wonderfully smooth rums that you should try however these are our favs.
Instead of ice, you could try keeping your rum in the freezer. This way you do not water down the rum and it pours like syrup 🙂
Rum Daiquiri – can be made with light or dark rum. Traditionally made with light rums however but it is all down to your personal tastes. Daiquiri’s are a very simple cocktail to make with few ingredients;
Rum, Lime Juice, Liquor, Fresh Fruit, Icing Sugar
Here we will tell you how to make a strawberry daiquiri however you can mix and match the flavours how ever you want.
Rum – light or dark – 2oz
Flavoured Liquor – Cactus Jack Strawberry works well – 1/2oz
Lime Juice – 3/4oz
1 cup crushed ice
5-10 fresh strawberries
Icing sugar – to taste depending on how sweet you like it
How to make it:
Pop all ingredients into a blender and mix until well and truly blended. The consistency will be that of a slush puppy. Pour into your favourite glass and enjoy. Be careful as these can be quite potent as all of the liquid bar the ice is booze!
Dark & Stormy – a comforting drink that is wonderful in the winter and reminds me of my pops. Another dead simple drink to make.
Bitters or lime Juice
How to make it:
Pour your rum in the glass – you choose how much you like. I would recommend a highball glass. Once you have your chosen amount of rum then add the ginger beer to taste and then add a dash of lime juice. Voila – you have your dark and stormy. Yummy!
Pina Colada – if you like pina colada’s….. yep sorry about that, the song is probably stuck in your head now too haha!
This is a perfect rum cocktail for those warm sunny days and a scrummy holiday drink. Not the lightest of cocktails so I personally couldn’t drink too many but one or two is just right.
Light Rum – a nice mount gay makes a good choice – 2oz
Pineapple Juice, fresh is best – 2oz
Cream of Coconut – 1 1/2oz
How to make:
Pour all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake it like you mean it and then pour it to a cocktail glass. Sit back, relax and enjoy.
Hot Buttered Rum – Warm, cozy and indulgent. Another perfect boozy drink for those cold evenings. A must for when sat outside by the fire in the winter. Tastes good all year round though 🙂
Dark Rum – 1 1/2oz
Unsalted Butter – 4oz
Dark Brown Sugar – 1/2 cup
Boiling Water – 3/4 cup
Ground Cinnamon – 3/4 tsp
Ground Ginger – 3/4 tsp
Ground Nutmeg – 1/2 tsp
Finely Grated Orange Zest – 1 tsp
Fresh Orange Juice – dash
How to make it:
First you need to make the spiced butter and you do this by mixing the butter (of course) with the sugar, orange zest, nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon. Mix until well combined. The spiced butter makes enough for 4 drinks.
Next – combine 2 tbsp of the spiced butter with the rum in a heatproof glass. Pour in the boiling water and stir well. Finish off this tasty, tasty drink by adding a small dash of fresh orange juice.
Mmmmm as I am writing this, it is a cold summers day and a very rainy day and so, I may just have to take this as an excuse to go and make some. Bye!
