The cathedral city of Exeter sits in the wonderful county of Devon in south west England. Situation on the River Exe the city of Exeter is thought to have been the most south westerly fortified Roman settlement in Britain. Although the city is only small with a population of around 130,000, it still has a wealth of history providing attractive architecture and a wonderful atmosphere. The city’s history goes back beyond the arrival of the Romans in AD 50. Some things of interest would be the magnificent Roman wall, as well as some unique and interesting passages that can be found underground, of course it goes without saying the cathedral is also an attraction to add to your to do list.
The original cathedral dates back to around 1050 however many changes have been made since then and the official foundation was in 1133 however was not completed for many more years. The building was rebuilt in a gothic style with the work being completed around 1400. Naturally other alterations were to take place but none so more drastic then after the war world two bombings during 1942. Most of the building was destroyed and so major worked was carried out to restore the building to its former glory.
After the second world war much of the city was in need of repair and so those faithful folk of Devon rebuilt the city, originally at the heart of the wool trade Exeter is now considered the centre for tourism in Devon and Cornwall. Exeter is well known for its independent arts scene and has a great love for sporting and music events providing some top locations for both.
This city is steeped in so much history with beautiful walks through the city and wonderful country scenes that are close by. With over 2000 years in the making you are sure to find some interesting things to amuse yourself with when visiting this beautiful city.
