Bristol
Bristol can be found in the south west of England and is both city and county. The city of Bristol has borders with both South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. Historically Bristol was divided between these two counties until in 1373 it became its own county. From between the 13th to the 18th century Bristol prospered and was one of the top three city in England (based on tax receipts). Unfortunately during the industrial revolution the city got left behind by the likes of Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool.
At the junction of the two rivers, Frome and Avon, Roman Villas and Iron Age Forts were built and so during the 11th century the town was known as “the place at the bridge” or “Brycgstow”. Being so close to the sea Bristol has a long history as the starting place for many voyages into the new world. Today Bristol’s income comes mainly from electronics, aerospace industries and creative media. The docks once busy with ship loads of people has now been re-developed into bustling centres of heritage and culture where people can find out about the history of this wonderful city.
